We had lots of fun planting seeds this week. We can't wait to see the results in a few months! Take a look and see how we sowed potatoes, strawberries, lettuce, carrots, turnips and much more!

Many thanks to Cliona Connelly and all the staff of Wexford County Hall for inviting us to celebrate World Wetlands Day with a very dynamic and interactive exhibition and workshop.
The students had a fantastic time learning about the various local species of flora and fauna and the challenges presented in protecting and maintaining this very vulnerable habitat and it's inhabitants. As an extra treat, students were invited to attend the chamber, where they received an overview of the important jobs that our councillors do and take part in a q & a session with chairman, George Lawlor, councillor Ger Carthy and Tom Enright, CEO. A huge thank you to all who organised this special opportunity for our students. A big thanks to Cliona Connelly, our Environmental Awareness Officer for a delivery of Christmas tree mulch for our garden!
The committee and other volunteers worked tirelessly to spread it around the garden and it has made a big difference! We love that our old Christmas trees were put to good use in a green, sustainable way. A huge thank you to Fiona Kavanagh from the RSA, who spoke to the classes about road safety today.
Students were very engaged throughout the informative and fun presentations and they learned a great deal about how to best protect themselves on our roads. Each student received a reflective armband or keyring or jacket to use when out and about-thanks so much, Fiona! Our committee learned about green manure today with Marianne.
Green manures are fast-growing plants sown to cover bare soil. Often used in the vegetable garden, their foliage smothers weeds and their roots prevent soil erosion. When dug into the ground while still green, they return valuable nutrients to the soil and improve soil structure. After growing so many things in our beds, they needed some rejuvenation! Thanks again to Marianne for her ongoing support. A big thank you to the committee for all their hard work this term. We have made a great start on our new theme and we are looking forward to continuing this work in 2023!
On behalf of the Green School Committee, we would like to thank everyone in the school community and beyond for their ongoing support. Wishing you all a very happy, peaceful and green Christmas! A huge thanks to Lucy Murphy from An Taisce who visited the school today to conduct a walkability audit with the committee.
We looked at the facilities outside of our school and noted features that were beneficial for walkers and also areas that we could improve upon. Lucy guided the discussion and we gained lots of inspiration for potential future campaigns. The boys and girls on the committee spoke so articulately and were very knowledgeable about the local area. There's not much that gets by these students! To top it off, Lucy was kind enough to bring a treat for every member-a reusable water bottle, hi-vis and pencil case and pencil. We are looking forward to working closely with Lucy in the new year. Here in Scoil Mhuire, we are delighted to introduce you to our new Green School Committee-and what a committee it is!
Annie, Sarah, Georgia, Tegan, Aoife, Tadgh, Conor, Erin, Caoimhe and Sam are the most dedicated and passionate committee members out there and are already making their mark on the school. We would like to thank them for their hard work so far and are very excited to see the progress they make on our current theme of Travel and Global Citizenship! |
