Many thanks to Lucy from Green Schools who delivered scooter workshops today to classes from junior infants to second.
I think it is clear that the students had lots of fun and most importantly learned so much about scooting and road safety, in general. Lucy began her lessons in class and used the story of 'Why Animals Can't Ride Scooters' to highlight potential hazards and demonstrate correct safety procedures when scooting. The second part of the lesson involved practical instruction on the yard. Lucy identified parts of the scooter, highlighted the importance of wearing a helmet and hi-vis, demonstrated correct positioning when scooting and vital skills such as gliding, braking and the emergency stop! Students then had fun partaking in obstacles courses and games to finish. Lucy will be back with us next week (Tuesday, 13th) to conduct bike safety workshops for the senior end (3rd to 6th). We can't wait! Well done to all the boys and girls who took part today!

Our scooter workshop for junior to second class has been rescheduled for Wednesday, 7th of June.
Additionally, Lucy Murphy from An Taisce will kindly complete a bike workshop for senior students (third to sixth) on Tuesday, 13th of June. Students who wish to participate in the practical element of the workshops should bring in their bike or scooter on the day. Lucy will also deliver in-class lessons to each class about bike and scooter safety. Further details will be provided over Aladdin in the coming weeks. A massive well done to all our students who participated in Bike Week 2023!
These students cycle on a weekly basis and received certificates to day to celebrate their efforts. If you would like to share photos of your recent adventures on the Green School page, please email ourladysislandns@gmail.com. Our students from 5th and 6th class were very privileged to attend the launch of the Irish section of the Eurovelo 1 route, which was held in Our Lady's Island and attended by the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Jack Chambers.
'The launch event marks the culmination of many hours of work at both national and local level in ensuring the installation of dedicated signage along the full route of around 2,350km that passes through 11 counties along Ireland’s Atlantic coast. Offering cyclists a fully signposted route along predominantly quiet, local and regional roads, Overall, EuroVelo 1, also known as the Atlantic Coast Route, is 11,150km long and runs through Norway, UK, Ireland, France, Spain and Portugal.' - Cycling Ireland How lucky are we that the launch took place in our little part of the island?! Bike Week is an annual celebration and promotion of the benefits of cycling with over 900 events taking place across the country, including family events, heritage cycles, maintenance workshops, and learn-to-cycle events. Here in Scoil Mhuire, we encourage our students to come to school in a 'green way', when it is possible and safe to do so. Students regularly walk, scoot, car-pool and cycle to school. To celebrate Bike Week (13th - 21st May), we are encouraging all our students to make a particular effort to cycle or scoot to school in a safe manner and to also get out and about in the evenings and at weekends! In school, we have a large bike rack located beside the shed where students can park their bikes and scooters. Additionally, we are currently in the process of updating our storage facilities, with a new bike and scooter rack on the way! Many thanks to Green Schools Ireland (An Taisce) and SECAD Windfarm Community Funds for providing support and funding for this project. There are so many benefits to cycling including:
Take a look at some of the video links below for cycling and scooting tips and tricks! Our Green School Committee and students from Third Class were very fortunate to be able to take part in a zoom workshop with Dr. Elaine Murtagh, Senior Lecturer in. Physical Education in the Department of. Physical Education and Sport Sciences at the University of Limerick.
We learned about the benefits of walking and exercise on our bodies and discussed ways in which we can enhance our walks and make them more fun and appealing. Thanks so much to Elaine for kindly giving up her time to speak with our students. The talk was a resounding success. Our green school students, in particular, are excited to organise events such as colour runs and walk and talks in the near future! We enjoyed a wonderful Easter Sponsored Walk earlier today, with even a bit of sunshine to light the way! There was great excitement along the walk and also some dancing in the playground at the end to celebrate!
A big thank you to the Parents Association, our local Garda and the Coastguard who all assisted us today on our walk. It was very much appreciated. We were also privileged and delighted to be joined on the walk by the children and staff from Páistí Beaga. Thank you all so much. - Ms. Druhan Thanks to the boys and girls from first class to sixth class and to Marianne for orgainsing the planting of our native hedging on our school boundary.
Well done to fourth and fifth classes who took part in this year's Science Blast in the RDS.
Ms. Donnellan expertly guided the classes in their investigation into the salinity of Our Lady's Island Lagoon. A huge amount of investigative work was completed, which required a great deal of focus, problem-solving, discipline and teamwork. We are extremely proud of our students. Well done to all! |
